Unique Ideas for Exchanging Christmas Gifts

Unique Ideas for Exchanging Christmas Gifts - Yellow green gift box with white ribbon

How do you exchange your gifts? Most of us are pretty traditional, handing over our gifts to the recipient at a party or around the tree on Christmas mornings. But have you ever considered having a bit more fun with your gift giving? Try out some of these unique ideas for exchanging Christmas gifts this year!

Hide your gifts. This works well for kids and adults alike, and adds a bit of challenge and adventure to your Christmas morning gift exchange. On Christmas Eve, sneak out and squirrel away your family’s presents around the house. Depending on the size of our family and your home, you can either hide one gift per person, or hide all the gifts that aren’t from Santa. Write out a couple of clues to help everyone find their stash of presents, making the clues easier or harder depending on the age of the seeker. Just don’t forget where you’ve hidden everything!

Play holiday trivia. This is especially good for holiday parties where gifts are being exchanged – even better if it’s a secret Santa gift exchange where the presents aren’t allocated to people already. The first person to answer each question gets to pick a present from the pile. Once you have a gift, you’re out of the competition.

Musical chairs. Another great party game, especially for kids. Unlike the traditional musical chairs, make sure there are enough places for each child, so that nobody goes home empty handed. Put a gift under each chair, play the music, and have the children run around in a circle. When the music stops, every child will rush for the nearest chair. Whatever the present under their chair is, they get to take home with them.

Gift auction. Spice things up at your gift exchange with a little friendly competition! Host a party and have all your friends or co-workers bring in a gift that will be put on display. Then, assign each person 100 points they can use to bid on the gifts they like. Let the auction run until each person has used up his or her points and everyone wins a gift.

Around the world. Place a collection of different countries in a hat and have everyone draw one out. Each person then buys a gift that reminds them of that country. The next time you get together, have everyone draw a new country out of the hat – whichever country you choose, that’s the present you’ll keep.
