Chrome fairy lights outdoor - Decorate with Deb: Creative Ways to Decorate with Fairy Lights

Fairy Lights are an absolute godsend for Christmas decorating. Drape them around anything and there is instantly an added air of magic, warmth and wonder. Be inspired to achieve this Christmas magic in every nook and cranny of your hope with these fabulously innovative ways to use fairy lights.

You won’t want to take these Christmas fairy lights down after Christmas – but luckily with many of these ideas you can simply tone them down in January and they will still make a beautiful addition to your regular home decor.

We stock a wide range of Christmas fairy lights that are perfect for these ideas – have a look here!

Fairy Light Christmas Card Display

Forget about the mantelpiece for displaying well wishes from friends and family. Hang string lights in loose horizontal lines inside an old empty frame, or attach to a plain wall with removable hooks or tac. Use mini craft pegs to clip your cards on them. Once Christmas is over, this is a great shabby chic way to display photos.

Paper Cup Light Garland

Choose dixie paper cups in a few colours that suit your Christmas decor theme – this DIY project is great for a bright family theme (LINK to coloured one). Cut a hole in the bottom of each cup, and place each bulb inside one, alternating the colours evenly. Use masking tape on the bottom of the cup to attach the connecting fairy light wires – plug in, and voila.

Tomato Cage Christmas Trees

Conical tomato vine cages make the perfect basis for Christmas decorations as they look just like Christmas trees! You can pick these up at a hardware or gardening store. Simply weave your fairy lights throughout – you may need a few sets depending on the size of your cage. We like using a few different sizes and placing them in threes around the home.

Snow globe Terrariums

Terrariums are all the rage at the moment – so why not jazz them up a bit for Christmas? We love the idea of making our own snow globe-style Christmas villages by filling large glass bowls and jars (think old fishbowls) with light up displays and copper seed lights .

Burlap Garland

For a rustic Christmas decor, create your own lighted garland with burlap ribbons (LINK to product). We like either cutting thick strips of different shades of burlap into 20cm pieces and tying them around the fairy lights, allowing the fray to show, or braiding long strings of burlap ribbon around a string of lights.

Write words

What words embody Christmas for you? ‘Love’, ‘Hope’, ‘Family’, are some great ones to be reminded of throughout the festive season. Use small removable hooks and tac to arrange your fairy lights in the shape of your chosen word, or use pins on a large corkboard and hang this on the wall.

Hang vertically

Mount a curtain rod on a blank wall, and hang several strings of fairy lights from it, creating a waterfall-like statement feature. For an extra glint of modern sparkle, pick up some mirror garland and hang in the same way, at varying lengths. This is sure to turn heads, will help bounce the Christmas light all across the room.

Intertwine through a plant

Who says that the Christmas tree should be the only magical plant in the house? We love using the understated copper seed lights intertwined through our regular household plants for an added festive Christmas twinkle throughout the home.

DIY Flameless Fire Pit

Achieve that extra ‘warmth’ of a Christmas fire in your home without any hassle or hazard. Simply arrange rocks and logs in the shape of a campfire around a pile of fairy lights, leaving gaps between the logs to see the lights. Pull some of the lights through, plug in, and turn on. I guess you’ll have to find a different excuse for all those marshmallows!

Firefly Fairy Light Jars

Fairy Light Jars are great to use as part of your centrepiece, side table display, bedside night light, or hung up as lanterns. All you need is a string of battery powered fairy lights and a mason jar. Fill the jar with the lights, turn them on, screw shut, and there you have a jar full of magic!
