Tired of tinsel? Try our cute new alternative to string around your tree – paper chains! These are so simple to make, and are a great way to mix and match different colours and patterns to your theme, or even use up that old wrapping paper.
What you’ll need
- Paper – we suggest between two and four different types. Use your creative eye to choose which colours and patterns you want to mix and match on your tree
- Ruler and pencil
- Scissors
- Double-sided tape, or glue
Method
- Using your ruler, pencil, and scissors, trace and cut up identical strips of paper. We recommend the maximum dimensions of 30cm x 5cm, but you can reduce this to your taste if you want tighter chains. (Note: the larger the paper, the less work!)
- If using double-sided tape, place a small piece of tape along one of the small edges on each strip of paper.
- Tape or glue the edges of the first strip together to form a loop. If using glue, ensure that you hold the edges together until the glue dries.
- Place the second strip of paper through the first, and join together with either the tape or glue. Repeat.
- Be careful to keep an eye on the order in which you use each style of paper so as to keep the correct pattern – for example alternating white, red and polkadots.
- Continue this process until you’ve reached your desired length.
- String across your tree alongside your baubles and fairy lights and ta-da – your own homemade paper chain decorations are complete!
Note: these look great with handmade pom-poms!
