Decorating with Christmas stockings

Christmas stockings - Pesonalised stockings hanging in a fireplace

Christmas stockings are a holiday decorating staple. We’ve all seen a row of stockings strung up above a mantle in the movies, in department store or even in our own homes! But stockings don’t have to be confined to the mantle place. Here are some ways you can use stockings as decorations throughout the home this Christmas!

In the bedroom
Hanging a Christmas stocking from the end of the bed is a sweet way to add some decorations to the bedrooms in your home. You can easily personalise a stocking for each of your family members – we’ve got lots of options, you’re bound to find something that suits your Christmas decor.

In the living room
Take a number of small Christmas stockings and attach them to a length of ribbon or twine with wooden pegs painted in festive colours, then hang the string across the top of your windows. You can decorate any stairs in a similar way – take three or four full-size stockings and hang them at regular intervals along the bannister.

In the kitchen
Spruce up your dinner table by using miniature stockings as cutlery holders! Make sure the stockings you use are made of a sturdy material like cotton – soft materials like felt won’t be able to hold the weight of a knife, fork and dessert spoon. These stockings can double as place markers for your guests. Simply paint or embroider each person’s initials onto their Christmas stocking before your decorate the table.

In the garden
Do you have old, unused or mismatched gumboots lying around? These are perfect for decorating your garden at Christmas! Turn them into 3D Christmas stockings by painting the body of the boot with heavy-duty red paint and the top with white. Make sure you use paint that will last out in the elements – regular craft paint will rub or be washed off. Once your new Christmas stockings are dry place them around the garden or on your front porch. You can fill them with whatever you like – sticks of outdoor Christmas lights, holly and mistletoe branches; you can even turn them into flower pots and grow some beautiful fresh flowers if you have a green thumb!
