Christmas Eve Traditions

Winning Traditions - Two children listening to a Christmas Story book read by their mother

The night before Christmas is an exciting time for kids and adults alike. The presents are under the tree, the big day is planned and there’s nothing to do but wait for morning. To help make the wait more fun, try starting up some Christmas Eve traditions that you can do year after year.

Slumber Party
If you have kids this is a wonderful tradition to start. Gather some pillows, mattresses and blankets in one room – it could be the living room or one of your bedrooms – and allow everyone to sleep together while they wait for Santa.

Christmas Light Adventure
Do you know where the best Christmas light displays are in your area? In the weeks up to Christmas, do a bit or reconnaissance to find out which houses will turn it on this year, then gather your family or friends and check them out together. You can drive around playing carols as you search, or enjoy the warm summer night and go for a walk to look for lights. If o have kids this is a good way to tire them out before putting everyone to bed too!

Christmas Stories
Pick out your favourite Christmas story or poem and read it aloud to your loved ones each Christmas Eve. Make an evening of it by laying out some snacks and drinks and getting everyone into their pajamas before your start. You can read the story all yourself, or share the pages out amongst everyone. If you’re feeling especially energetic, you could even put on a full performance!

Open a Gift
This is a popular Christmas Eve tradition for a reason! Wrap up some festive new pajamas for your family and let them open the gift the night before. Brand new Christmas PJs will make getting ready for bed more enjoyable, even on such an exciting night.

Carol Concert
Going caroling isn’t a common tradition in Australia, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have a good old sing-along! Pick out a few of your favourite carols and put on a concert. Invite your friends and family over so you have an audience, and let them know they’re welcome to join in!
