Tips for Decorating Your Christmas Tree

Decorating your Christmas Tree - with a star shape decor hanging in a christmas tree

Your Christmas tree is the centerpiece of your home during the festive season, so of course you’ll want it to look the best it possibly can. Try out these tips for decorating your Christmas tree to create a stunning display that will delight family and visitors alike.

Step 1 – Hang the lights. When decorating your tree this year try stringing the lights up first. This will light the tree from the inside out and brighten up all the garlands and ornaments you layer on top. Start at the base of the tree and work your way up, wrapping lights around every major branch moving from the trunk to the tip.

Step 2 – Layer your garlands and tinsel. To avoid your tree branches getting caught between tightly cinched garlands, start at the top of the tree and slowly increase the amount of garland you layer on each branch as you get lower. To avoid a busy look on your tree, use a variety of garlands from plain to fancy. Thin, garlands look best hung from branch to branch; thicker paper and ribbon garlands, and bright lengths of tinsel, look best wrapped loosely around the entire tree. Choose garlands and tinsel that match your broader colour theme and don’t be afraid to have some fun with materials like pom poms and beads.

Step 3 – Add your ornaments. First, find your most loved pieces. Showcase each of your favourite baubles by placing them in prime positions around the tree. Next, hang your larger ornaments, spacing them evenly around the tree. Fill in around those ornaments with medium and small-size ornaments. Be sure to hang some ornaments closer to the trunk to create depth and interest.
