One of our favourite things to do at this time of year is to share with you the hottest Christmas decorating trends and inspiration for the season ahead.

So put your Santa hat on, grab your notebook (or moodboard, or however you manifest your creativity) and let’s take a look at the most popular Christmas décor trends that are set to fill our homes for Christmas 2022.

Regardless of whether you’ve been longing for wonderful wreaths and gorgeous garlands to return to your home, or this is your friendly wakeup call that it’s time to get things moving, we’re sure you will love what we’ve got in store for Christmas décor trends in 2022.

Blue is Here to Stay

The lovely thing about decorating trends, or any trend really, is that often the really good ones don’t just appear one year and then disappear the next. Where a trend gathers some solid following, usually for good reason, we can see it remain in essence, but continue to morph and evolve, for a number of years to follow.

The use of a range of blue tones in Christmas decorating is an example of this. A couple of years ago now, we saw colours such as classic and navy blue make their mark on popular Christmas decorating trends. Since then, we’ve seen the colour palette of “Christmas blue” expand to include shades such as pastel and baby blue, and seafoam blue.

In 2022, the influence of blue is set to continue in Christmas decorating.

We’re excited to see the appearance of duck egg blue in a nod to the iconic Hamptons décor style.

Aqua and candy blue are just the thing for a pop of brightness and fun.

There’s no need to miss out on this growing trend if your Christmas decorating is traditionally inspired. The addition of navy and royal blue hues adds depth and a sense of elegance and luxury to a traditional Christmas colour palette.

Try Something New with Brightly Coloured Trees & Florals

There’s no denying that luscious green foliage is a great base for many different styles of Christmas decorating.

Depending on your colour scheme and selection of decorations and ornaments, green florals such as trees, wreaths and garlands can be magically transformed into a classic, traditional, contemporary or bold and fun style.

Snow-tipped florals add a hint of glistening snow but if you really want to make a statement, bold and bright coloured florals is where it is at!

All white Christmas trees have been around for a little while and definitely add an extra level of impact to your Christmas decorating style.

Further building on this Christmas decorating trend, we’re now seeing trees, garlands and wreaths available in an even wider selection of colours.

We can’t get enough of these gorgeous pink pieces. They are definitely something new and different to add to the Christmas decorating trends of 2022. And there’s plenty of other colour options available too.

The great thing about bright and bold Christmas florals is that they are super versatile and can be used as part of your home decorating at other times of the year as well. Pink or blue could be great for Easter decorating. Orange for Halloween? Inject some seasonal colour for springtime or summer or a special event or celebration. Use your imagination and let your creativity shine.

Christmas Ornaments are BIG

Christmas decorating doesn’t have to be all about small and delicate ornaments.

You’ve got permission to go BIG this year as our next Christmas decorating trend for 2022 features larger-than-life ornaments.

Think oversized balls and baubles in a range of impactful colours and textures.

Large ornamental bells and drums are great for adding interest and something a little different to your decorating efforts.

Large Christmas character ornaments and sweet treats make for large-sized Christmas smiles and fun!

Rethink What’s Up Top

Another iconic area of Christmas decorating that is demanding its time in the spotlight, is the prime real estate position at the top of your tree.

The boundaries of what is considered “acceptable” as a tree topper have expanded well beyond angels and stars. While there is always a place to honour tradition, think about how you can go bigger and better at the top of the tree this year.

You’ll likely spend lots of time curating and positioning all the gorgeous decorations on your tree, so it makes sense to give the same effort and thought to the piece-de-resistance, the cherry on top.

Our motto for tree-topping this year is “expect the unexpected”! Aim to make your show-stopping tree topper a wondrous surprise. Consider how you can use sprays, picks, ribbons, florals and even lights, perhaps with an angel or star in there too, to really embellish the uppermost part of your Christmas tree.

It’s a Sign (or a Poster!)

A simple, yet effective, way to elevate your Christmas decorating is to use Christmas signs or posters. Often sharing a beautiful Christmas phrase or message you can brighten up a side table, blank wall or even embellish your tree with many different Christmas signs.
