Celebrating Christmas Away From Home

Celebrating Christmas Away From Home - with two friends laughing while holding a cup

For most of us, Christmas day is spent with family and loved ones. But what if you’re family is across the country or overseas?  Just because you’re not at home doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate! Here are our tips for celebrating Christmas away from home.

  1. Find other people in the same situation. Chances are you’re not the only one who’s celebrating Christmas away from home. Ask around and find out if any of your friends or co-workers are also going to be away from their family and arrange to spend part of Christmas day together. If you have a big enough group you can host a Christmas lunch and ask everyone to bring their favourite festive food.
  2. Treat yourself. Splash out on your favourite take away food or buy yourself a special present – you can even wrap it if you want to really get into the Christmas spirit! Pour yourself a drink and watch your favourite Christmas movie or put on your favourite music and simply relax.
  3. Call your family. If you’re on the opposite side of the world, find a time in advance that works for everyone and call or Skype your loved ones on Christmas day. You can swap stories and catch up on all the family gossip, and remind yourself that that even though you’re not in the same place, you’re all thinking of each other.
  4. Attend the local festivities. You might not have Carols by Candlelight to go to but there will always be something fun – and often free – to attend. It might be carols in the local church or hall or a local night market. Whatever it is. It will get you out and about enjoying the spirit of Christmas.
  5. Just relax! You might not have a big feast to attend but instead you can simply sit back and enjoy the free time that comes over the holiday season.
