Christmas craft is a fun activity that the kids always love – and, we mean the big kids as well as the little kids! To help you to be perfectly prepared for the fabulously rewarding art of craft, here is our go-to list of tools for Christmas craft.

Whether you’re an avid crafter throughout the year or not, Christmas tends to bring out the creative side in many people. From Christmas cards to Christmas decorations, and even DIY Christmas gifts. But when you are half-way through a Christmas craft project, there is nothing more frustrating than finding that you are missing an essential item or tool.

As with a lot of things in life, the secret to successful Christmas crafting all lies in the preparation. If you are going to embark on some serious Christmas craft activities, them setting yourself up with a good Christmas craft kit is definitely the place to start.

Depending on the type of projects you are planning to do, a Christmas craft kit can be quite small or very large in size. To help both the novice and experienced Christmas crafters and DIY gifters among us with getting together all that they might need, we have gathered a few ideas to help with creating the perfect Christmas crafters kit. To make it easy to find what you need, we’ve broken it down by the different types of Christmas craft projects that you might be undertaking.

Christmas Craft with the Little Kids

For those messy moments of crafting up some Christmas magic with the kids, we recommend that you have the following items on hand.

  • A4 sheets of 160gsm to 200gsm cardboard in various colours – for Christmas craft; red, green, yellow and white are stapled colours but don’t limit yourself just to that!
  • A ream of A4 paper –we like to choose recycled paper
  • A selection of poster paints in various colours – for younger children we recommend washable and non-toxic paint
  • a set of artist paintbrushes for kids
  • old container lids to act as a paint palate – ice cream lids and takeaway container lids are great
  • coloured pencils
  • washable coloured textas or markers
  • glue stick
  • a wet glue pot such as Mod Podge
  • a pair of scissors – for young children, you might like to use safety or paper-only scissors so they are safer
  • coloured pipe cleaners
  • non-toxic glitter
  • Christmas stickers
  • a few rolls of sticky tape

With the above items on hand, the kids can create Christmas craft pieces such as Christmas cards, Christmas posters, wrapping paper, and decorations. This list also forms a good basis for almost any craft kit, for the young or not-so-young, at Christmas or anytime of the year.

  • jewelry basics such as beading wire, clasps and fasteners, pendant backs, earrings, and keyring rings
  • hot glue gun and extra glue
  • puff paint or material paint
  • crafty scissors – zigzag or other fun patterns
  • needle nose pliers
  • a pair of tweezers for all those fiddly bits
  • tissue paper in a few colours – great for gift wrapping accessories
  • ribbon in various colours and widths
  • hessian twine and organza
  • beads in various colours, shapes, sizes, and materials including glass, wood, and plastic
  • Christmas craft baubles
  • Christmas craft pine cone mix
  • twig picks
  • clear cellophane
  • gift boxes or baskets for hampers
  • empty mason jars

These Christmas craft items make it easy to create small Christmas gifts, decorations, cards, hampers and creative, Christmas craft gift wrapping with ease.

For the serious Christmas Crafters and DIY gift-makers

For those who are serious about making their own gifts, you can pick and choose items from the above lists to suit what you need. And along with these, we suggest adding to your Christmas craft kit with the following.

  • sandpaper – select a larger grain as well as a smaller grain
  • a staple gun and plenty of spare staples
  • a metre of calico – this material takes paint well and is very versatile
  • tape measure
  • screwdrivers – Phillips head and a flat head
  • nails – various sizes, including hook nails
  • screws
  • drill
  • hammer
  • a permanent marker
  • superglue
  • a good set of paintbrushes
  • primer
  • a can of white and a can of black spray paint – you would be surprised the amount of small DIY projects this comes in handy for
