We all know the favourite tried and tested Christmas dessert ideas. There’s Christmas pudding and Christmas cake, trifle and pavlova, to name just a few. But just because they are the popular and recurring favourites, doesn’t mean there’s not room for some other yummy things on the dessert table.

If you are looking for some new and delicious  Christmas dessert ideas, that aren’t pudding or cake, then give these recipes a try.

Gluten-Free Rum Balls

These gluten-free rum balls are a quick and easy Christmas dessert idea that everyone can enjoy. And sprinkled with coconut they look suitably festive too.

Serves: 24

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1 cup sultanas
  • 2 1/2 cups gluten-free rice cracker crumbs
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup desiccated coconut *to decorate
  • 1 tbs rum

Method

  1. Place milk, sugar and butter into a saucepan over low heat, until butter and sugar have melted.
  2. Mix in dry ingredients and rum.
  3. Place in fridge for 30 minutes to set.
  4. Roll into walnut-sized balls and roll in coconut.

Red Velvet Raspberry Trifle

Give an old favourite a fresh twist with these Red Velvet Raspberry Trifles. Keep the traditionalists happy but offer something new and different too – all in the same delicious Christmas dessert idea.

Prep: 2:00 Hrs
Serves: 6

Ingredients:

  • 450 g red velvet cake mix cooked
  • 85 g raspberry jelly
  • 2 cups thick custard
  • 300 ml whipped cream
  • 440 g canned peaches drained sliced reserve liquid
  • 1 cup fresh raspberries *to decorate
  • 1 tbs milk chocolate grated optional *to decorate
  • 2 tbs pistachios chopped optional *to decorate
  • 1 tbs sherry optional

Method

  1. Make cake to packet directions preferably using a square tin. Allow to cool completely.
  2. Allow jelly to set until almost fully set. If it sets too firm, remove from the fridge for approximately ½ hour before assembling trifle.
  3. Assembly: Slice cake into 2cm wide slices.
  4. Line a 6-cup capacity glass bowl with the cake slices. If the cake is dry, sprinkle with some peach juice or sherry.
  5. Roughly chop/break up the jelly and distribute across the surface of the cake and up the sides of the bowl.
  6. Arrange peach slices over jelly then dollop with custard.
  7. Top with the whipped cream.
  8. Garnish with fresh berries, chopped pistachios and grated chocolate.
  9. Refrigerate until required.

  • 1 x 20cm square loose base cake pan

Stuffed Strawberries

These delightful little treats make the perfect Christmas dessert idea. Fruity and creamy flavours, and festive colours too, combine perfectly in these Stuffed Strawberries.

Ingredients

  • 1 punnet fresh strawberries large
  • 150 g cream cheese
  • 3/4 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 tsp icing sugar

METHOD

  1. Beat cream cheese, vanilla and icing sugar until well combined.
  2. Wash strawberries and cut off the stalk end.
  3. Stand the strawberries on the cut end.
  4. Cut the pointed end to form a cross.
  5. Pipe or spoon cream cheese mixture into the cavity.
  6. Chill until ready to serve.
