The Spirit of Giving Is About More Than Gifts
#1 Remember the Spirit of Giving When You Get
Typically, and especially when there are kids involved, Christmas generates gorgeous gift wrapping and boxes stuffed with new toys, clothing, gadgets and helpful tools to make life more streamlined around the home. And if this sounds like a familiar setting, then it is the ideal opportunity to give when (or before) you get, in the spirit of giving. In the lead up to the Christmas, gather your clan to go through cupboards, pantries, bookshelves and toy boxes to pick out any items that have been outgrown or are simply just out of love and not being used. From this, turn your “trash” into someone else’s treasure by donating any unwanted items of good working order to one of the many charities that could pass them on to families in need. Alternatively, put a listing up on one of your local buy, swap and sell pages on Facebook for free items to people in your local community. It’s amazing what other people will cherish that you don’t need anymore. Alternatively, think about paying forward a random act of kindness in the spirit of giving. A free cup of coffee to the car behind at the drive through, helping someone with their arms full pack their bags of groceries, or letting a mother with screaming children in tow go in front of you at the store checkout, for example. It's these simple, selfless acts that can really go a long way to embracing and sharing the spirit of giving.#2 Draft a Give List
This idea is especially great for teaching the value of the spirit of giving to children. Instead of wishing for everything they want this year, encourage the spirit of giving by creating a list of things your kids would like to give to people or to do as a favour for friends and family. Use the give list activity as a way to teach and remind your kids, and yourself, that gifts don’t always have to come in fancy gift wrapping too. - tidy up an outdoor area
- mow a lawn for an elderly family member, friend or someone particularly short on time
- wash someone’s car for them
- bake some morning tea items to deliver to family
