DIY Christmas Cards and Gift Tags

christmas cards and gift tagsAdd something extra to your gifts and greeting this year by creating your own Christmas cards and gift tags! It’s such a simple, fun activity the whole family can join in, and you’ll have something unique for friends and family to treasure.

If you’re planning to send out hand-made Christmas cards to loved ones this festive season there are dozens of designs you can try, from simple to complex. No matter how fancy you want your cards to look, the basics are always the same. Start with some good quality, thick cardboard in whatever colour you want. Have some craft glue, glitter, pens and markers, coloured and patterned paper, and double-sided sticky tape on hand and let your imagination run wild!

If you’re new to card making it’s best to keep it simple first. Try making a card with a simple, geometric design – for example a hanging ornament! All you need to do is fold a piece of your cardboard in half, and use a ruler to draw a black line from the top of the card to somewhere just below the middle. Cut out a large circle from brightly coloured or patterned paper to create a bauble and attach at the bottom of the black line with a piece of double-sided tape. Cut out the ornament top shape from white or silver paper and attach with a small amount of glue. Embellish the black line – now your baubles string – with stickers or a line of glitter and send!

Making DIY Christmas tags is even simpler, and they add a beautiful, personal touch to pressies! Simply trace the shape you want your tag to be (snowmen, trees and stars could be fun alternatives to the traditional rectangle), cut out with a Stanley knife or scissors and a steady hand, and punch a hole in the top. Thread through a piece of string or ribbon and write a message on one side of the tag. Then just fasten to a present and place under the tree!
