Top Tips for Christmas Tree Decorating

It’s an exciting day putting up and decorating the Christmas tree. With a beautiful tree sitting in the room, it really hits home that Christmas is just around the corner!

So what do you need to create the perfect Christmas Tree?

Know Your Themes

There are countless themes, and variations of themes, that you can use for your Christmas tree decorating inspiration. Here’s some ideas to get you thinking about some of the different Christmas themes and decorating style options.

Modern
It’s simple, stylish and sleek. Most modern trees will be colour themed with matching ornaments, embellishments and Christmas lights. One way to decide the best modern theme and colours for your home or room, is to look around. Will a ice-cool silver tree compliment your white leather couch? Or a brightly coloured red and green tree look better on your timber floor? Perhaps you like your Christmas tree to be on-trend and reference the latest in home décor styling or a true reflection of your unique personality and style. With a modern Christmas tree, almost anything goes. The less traditional and and more creative you can be the better for this one.

Traditional
In order to be truly traditional, this theme ideally needs a real tree. Not only will your house look like Christmas, it will smell like Christmas too. Once you have selected the right sized Christmas tree, get your tree skirt. For a real tree, the skirt is particularly important to catch any fallen pine needles. Also, it’s a great way to hide all your lighting extension cords. When it comes to the ornaments, keep them basic: lights, baubles and a few carefully selected ornaments. You want to enhance the living pine tree and compliment its natural beauty.

Personal
It’s hard to go past a tree with the family’s personal touch. Christmas is the time the family comes together, so it makes sense to show it on the tree: the angel cut-out your daughter drew back in grade 1, the bauble your son painted in the shops down the road and the year you all went to Paris and bought a Christmas trinket of the Eiffel Tower. These ornaments aren’t just a touch of decoration, but a memory in your family history.

If you love the idea of the sentiment that a family inspired tree creates, but also love having an immaculately dressed tree with all the stylish trimmings, consider using 2 trees. You can have one as the show piece and one for the memories and family tradition of all helping to decorate the tree.

Get The Basics

Lights
You simply can’t have a properly decorated Christmas tree without lights! Be sure to buy enough so that you can cover the tree from top to bottom. There are plenty of colours to choose from too. Do you want soft and warm, or more cool and bright? White lights are the most versatile and will compliment almost any theme, while green and red lights will help boost the Christmas spirit. This home décor staple can also come in handy throughout the rest of the year when you want to add a bit of sparkle to your home decoration.

Baubles and Ornaments
Gather a selection of baubles and tree ornaments to suit your chosen theme. There are so many gorgeous colours and finishes available to choose from that you can mix and match to create your unique Christmas décor style, and that is just the baubles. Tree ornaments and decorations widen the scope even further. From festive characters and jingling bells, to ornate stars, hearts and snowflakes, there is no end to the possibilities.

Tree Topper
Traditionally you have two options to crown your tree: the star of Bethlehem and the angel. But with modern day tree decorating, there are no rules about what you can and cannot use as a tree topper. You might choose to top your tree with a beautiful floral arrangement or any other item that suits your theme or perhaps has significant meaning to you and your loved ones. This is the crowning glory of your masterpiece so don’t be afraid to go all out with something lavish and bold.

Florals and Garlands
Instead of using tinsel, you should look to use plenty of floral adornments such as flowers, picks and sprays to add texture and dimension to your tree. Decorative garlands are also a great option and whilst they are often floral based can also be made of fabrics or ribbon in materials such as burlap or organza.

Handy Hints
Once you have gathered all the bits and pieces that you will need for your tree decorating project, it’s time to get busy. Here are a few handy tips to keep you on the right track to producing a gorgeous Christmas tree.

  • Make sure you fluff all the branches and that the tree is standing even and straight before you start decorating.
  • Before you start, check that the lights are working and all other decorations and ornaments are in good condition.
  • Start at the top! This may be the opposite of what you have always done, but starting at the top means that you won’t risk disturbing the rest of your precious creation as you struggle to get that final piece in place at the very top.
  • The tree toper doesn’t have to perch precariously on the very pinnacle of the tree. Consider placing your feature piece just slightly down from the very top. This will help it to look more a part of the whole design and not sticking out awkwardly on its own. You could also consider using a selection of picks to add further accent to this special area of the tree.
  • Get your lights in place.
  • Picks are a great addition to all areas of the tree and help to make the body of the tree look larger and fuller. For the best result, stagger your picks all over the tree and make sure that you position them so that you don’t have the same types of picks too close to each other.
  • You can also fill empty spaces and help to make the tree look fuller by placing less expensive and more simple ornaments and baubles towards the inside of the tree. You will just get a glimpse of them and can let the more treasured and decorative ornaments feature on the surface.
  • Now it’s time for the rest of the ornaments. Use a combination of large and small ones and nestle them slightly into the branches. You should secure them closely to the branch, as opposed to letting them dangle beneath.
  • Finally, add any statement pieces and your embellishments such as ribbon and garlands.
