How to Keep the Magic of Christmas Alive

There is magic in the air at Christmas time! Whether you are young, or young at heart, it is almost impossible not to get caught up in the joy and wonder of it all.

Unfortunately, believing in some of the most magical Christmas experiences, like the imaginative sound of reindeer hooves and sleigh bells approaching on Christmas Eve does not last forever. When the time comes that your kids no longer believe in the legend of Christmas, Santa and his elves, and mystical holiday characters, that doesn’t mean that the magic of Christmas has to come to an end.

The transitioning of Christmas magic is all about approach and delivery. Here are some of our top ideas on how to ensure everyone in your house can continue to honour and enjoy the magic of Christmas.

Spread the Christmas magic

No longer a believer? No problem. Outgrowing the legend of Santa means it is time to upgrade on Christmas magic responsibility. Instead of being part of the Santa Club, promote the kids to the Santa’s Secret Helpers Club.

The Santa’s Secret Helpers Club is for older kids only. Create your own membership motto to make them feel ultra-special for being a part of the club; e.g. an invitation-only group which is selected for their responsibility (i.e. for the non-believers of course…).

Using their ‘secret Santa agent skills’, show the kids how reindeer footprints appear on the driveway. How the sound of sleighbells chime on Christmas Eve. And, under strict confidence, encourage them to join in on the Christmas magic for the younger kids to enjoy.

Who gets to eat Santa’s cookie on Christmas Eve? The most conscientious helper of course!

Filling the older kids with secret responsibility will give them something new to look forward to and keep the Christmas magic alive.

‘Tis the season to give

Now is the ideal time to teach your kids some true Christmas magic. Expand their value of Christmas by involving them in some community spirit. The value for the gift of giving should never be underestimated.

Depending on what you can spare, here are some ideas to share your magic at Christmas time, outside of the family home:

  • package up a care gift to send to someone in the military
  • place a gift under Kmart’s Wishing Tree as part of the Salvation Army’s annual gift appeal
  • volunteer a couple of days to help prepare or deliver meals and goods to those in need

However you decide to spread your Christmas magic is up to you. But knowing you have done a good deed for someone that you may never meet is always a great feeling, especially at Christmas time.

Generate anticipation

Regardless of age Christmas is an opportunity to promote plenty of anticipation and enjoyment. Whether getting excited about the grandparents’ visit, going on an annual beach trip, enjoying a family get-together, or simply decorating the house full of Christmas magic; foster the spirit and get everyone primed for the holiday time.

And how about turning the annual ‘naughty and nice list’ into a year-long game. Think about some criteria for going above and beyond and let the kids play towards a master prize at the end of the year. The rules and amount of competitiveness is up to you.

Christmas magic never dies; it is forever in our hearts. Delivery is the defining element.
