  • In Germany and some other western European countries, Saint Nicholas comes on the night of the 5th of December. All the children leave their specially cleaned and shined boots in front of a door or window, and Saint Nick will leave toys, nuts, oranges, and chocolate for the good children.
  • In Japan the traditional Christmas meal is fried chicken! It’s so popular to eat KFC for dinner on Christmas that some families place their orders months in advance!
  • When visiting Finland, Santa leaves his sleigh behind and rides on a goat named Ukko. Legend has it that Ukko is made of straw, but is strong enough to carry Santa Claus anyway.
  • Santa Claus is based on a real person, St. Nikolas of Myra (also known as Nikolaos the Wonderworker, Bishop Saint Nicholas of Smyrna, and Nikolaos of Bari), who lived during the fourth century.
  • You might be familiar with the 26th of December of Boxing Day, but did you know it’s also Saint Stephen’s day? The holy day is mentioned in the Christmas Carol “Good King Wenceslas”.
  • Speaking of Boxing Day, the holiday was originally celebrated in England, and was a good day for household servants. After the Christmas feasting was over, the servants “boxed up” all the leftovers and were allowed to take them home.
  • If you’ve ever been to London at Christmas you might have seen the Christmas tree in Trafalgar Square. Every year the Trafalgar Square tree is donated by the people of Oslo, in Norway, in gratitude to the people of London for their assistance during World War 2.
  • After Christmas is over, some zoos take donated Christmas trees and use them to feed their animals.
  • The first ever Christmas as we know it was celebrated on December 25, AD 336 in Rome.
