Clever Christmas Storage Tips - Clever Christmas Decoration Storage Tips

When the excitement and fun of Christmas is over we are all left wondering where to put all of the Christmas decorations. Read ahead to discover seasonal storage ideas that will work for every type of decoration and suit every home.

Set aside an entire day.

Bite the bullet, grab a large coffee – and maybe some leftover Christmas cookies and a glass of wine if you’re in for the long haul. Getting your entire house back in order after decorations and guests can take some time, so set aside a day where you don’t need to attend to other errands. This shouldn’t be a solo effort – enlist your family members too, and delegate tasks accordingly. Mission Christmas-De-decoration: GO!

Invest in large, stackable tubs

These are readily available at Kmart, Target and so on – and worth the investment to save your Christmas items from mould and dust. Take a look at the items you need to store, and over-estimate a bit beyond that.

Store by section of your home

Year by year, you’ll normally be using the same decorations to adorn the same areas of your home, so dedicate each of these stackable tubs to each quadrant. Set aside a tub for the living area, bedrooms, kitchen/dining, and outdoors. When you get to the following year, Christmas decorating will be simplified!

Ribbons and Bows

Save spools for ribbons (or use cut up paper towel rolls). For pre-tied bows, fill the loops with toilet paper so they don’t become misshapen.

Textile Decorations

Table cloths, placemats, cushion covers, napkins, and more. Textiles are an easy way to spruce up your regularly home decor into a Christmas festive theme. However, if they’re not stored well for 11 months of the year, you may rediscover nasty stains and mould. Be sure to launder fabric items before putting them away for the season, and make sure they’re completely dry before storing.

Christmas Lights

Christmas lights …it’s nearly always a losing battle (note: you are not the winner). But, fold them by wrapping them around your hand, with one light at each fold, and you’ll have the least chance of damaging them. If you have several strands of fairy lights, make sure you store them in separate bags or boxes so they cannot merge together to plot your downfall next year!

Christmas Ornaments

Save original packaging – especially for fragile ornaments. Keep a box full of tissue paper and bubble wrap that you save from holiday deliveries and gifts – and have these on hand for storing those ornaments whose boxes you inevitably misplace or damage. And, be sure to have your lightest or most fragile ornaments on top to prevent breakage. For personalised or glitter-coated ornaments and stockings, wrap them in tissue paper first so that the embellishments won’t be damaged if they knock together.
