Christmas Décor Trends for 2020

We are so excited to share with you our selection of Christmas Décor Trends for 2020! There may be some that are unexpected and some that you adore, but all-in-all these trends reflect upon the wild year that 2020 has been. It would be a huge understatement to say that this year has been a year no like other, and I expect that COVID-19 will no doubt have an impact globally on how we celebrate this Christmas.

During the last few months of 2019 and the beginning of 2020, we went to the gift and décor fairs as we normally do to preview and select our range for Christmas 2020. During these visits we were excited to see some fresh new ideas, particularly in colour, colour combinations and new product designs. Then February came around and the world started to change. We all started to stay home and adjust how we spent our time.

Now whilst we may still be adjusting to our new normal, with Christmas on the horizon, it gives us the opportunity to remember what we are grateful for. With that in mind, I want to share with you what I believe will be the greatest trends for Christmas decorating in 2020.

A Very Blue Christmas

Each year home décor trends are differentiated by key colours, and 2020 is no different.

This Christmas season there is one colour in particular that we think will be showing up in some of the most stylishly decorated homes – Classic Blue.

Blue has long been considered a restful colour, linked to the peace we find when we look at a body of blue water or a beautiful blue sky. There is no doubt that it brings a sense of peace and tranquillity and offers a visual refuge in a busy world.

In fact, Classic Blue is Pantone’s colour of the year! To quote Leatrice Eiseman, the Executive Director of the Pantone Colour Institute,

“We are living in a time that requires trust and faith. It is this kind of constancy and confidence that is expressed by Pantone 19-4052 Classic Blue, a solid and dependable blue hue we can always rely on.”

We expect that blue will be used either as the primary colour in people’s homes when decorating for Christmas, or perhaps a feature colour combined with some of the more traditional Christmas colours such as silver and gold.

Festive Florals

The second trend we believe is going to be evident in many homes this Christmas is the use of florals as a key component of Christmas decorating.  Whilst florals have long been part of our Christmas decorating, it is the combination of particular varieties and colours that will be very on trend this year.

The classic poinsettia has been a favourite at Christmas time for quite some years, however it is now being offered in a huge variety of colours, textures, and styles.

Additionally, this year we believe flowers of many species will also find their way on to the Christmas tree, Christmas tables and feature in many wreaths and other festive floral arrangements.

These will range from rustic natives, to timeless roses and elegant magnolias as well as a huge variety of glittered branches and leaves.

Feeling Homely

No matter where you are in the world, there’s no doubt that COVID-19 has had a pretty drastic impact on the way we live our lives. I know that for me personally, and I suspect most of you, it meant a lot more time at home.

In some ways, this has been the one positive of the crazy year that is 2020. I hear a lot of people discussing how they have slowed down and connected more with their local communities and nature – embracing and appreciating what’s immediately in front of us.

For me, as someone who is semi-permanently thinking about home décor, I’ve certainly been embracing more the unique aesthetic of my little Australian country town – and I suspect this may be the case for many in their Christmas décor as we focus more locally.

In combination with the increasing trend of florals in festive décor, I really think the use of natives and rustic styles will tie in with feelings of homeliness this Christmas.

Crafting

Increased time at home has definitely meant a huge surge in crafting! In my town, at the height of the lockdown, the shelves of our craft stores were almost empty, and a lot of my favourite online stores are still out of stock of some of the essentials. If you’re anything like me, I turned the dial up on my crafting, so much that I had co-opt some space from hubby in our garage for me to craft in!

As we move toward the festive season, I think there’ll be a huge trend in handmade décor – perhaps with varying levels of success… but we are sure there is a craft project suitable for everybody and every skill level in the Christmas Craft section of our blog!

Wherever and however you might be celebrating Christmas in this not-so-typical year, I hope we have offered some inspiration and ideas on how to keep it a festive one full of love and good cheer.
